What is beauty? From a certain point of view, I think it might be an ‘ideal’. If you open the first page of Western art history, you will see cave paintings from Altamira, Spain. This painting is believed to contain a message wishing for successful hunting. In medieval Europe, there are many paintings depicting the miracles of Jesus and images of heaven. There’s even a word called ‘ideal type.’ So, not all ‘ideals’ can be said to be beautiful, but it cannot be denied that ideal situations or forms are attributes of beauty.
Artists realize their ideal form through sound, painting, sculpture, action, and other means. In that sense, Untell’s new single, which depicts oneself searching for an ideal, gives us something to think about. I think that perhaps the process of pursuing all the values we consider ideal is itself beautiful.
The featuring of teacher Moon-sik Yoon, who contrasts with the young Untel who pursues his ideals, is also interesting. If you look far away, you won’t be able to see nearby treasures. In that context, Teacher Moonsik Yoon’s words sound like the advice of someone who has lost everything while chasing a distant ideal.
